Fairhaven School

Fairhaven School is a specialist school and resource centre based in Napier catering for students with a variety of special needs, intellectual and/or related disabilities and Autistic Spectrum Disorders between the ages of five and twenty-one.

The school campus comprises a base school with two classrooms, and eight satellite classes mostly located in primary, intermediate and secondary schools in the Napier area while the newly commissioned satellite class at Bridge Pa is a joint initiative between IDEA Services and the school to cater for transitioning students into the workforce.

Each class has been carefully composed to ensure the maximum learning opportunities for all students while the high level of individual support provided by management, teachers, teacher aides and specialist teachers is a feature of the school.

Fundholding

Fairhaven School is a delegated accredited fundholder for students verified in the Ongoing and Reviewable Resourcing Scheme (ORRS) and is able to employ staff specialising in music, dance, art, speech and language, physiotherapy, recreational therapy, occupational therapy and behaviour management.

These specialists work closely with teaching staff integrating programmes within whole school planning. This enables smooth programming and less disruption for students enabling all students' particular needs, interests and aptitudes to be catered for within school-wide meaningful programmes.

Fundholding flexibility allows us to place resources immediately a need is identified where it most benefits all or individual students, whether it be specialist help, extra teaching, teacher aides or equipment.

Staffing

Fairhaven School is fully staffed with experienced, registered teachers assisted by a significant number of experienced teacher aides.

Staff demonstrate respect for each student's uniqueness and our affirming school culture contributes to students' confidence and sense of safety when learning.

At Fairhaven School students enjoy learning.

Throughout Fairhaven teaching and learning resources are well designed, accessible and used extensively by students. Teachers set high expectations for learning and encourage students to achieve their goals. We celebrate all student successes through effective use of digital cameras and display these successes throughout the wider school campus thus emphasising and underlining the whole school culture of 'WE ARE FAMILY' .

The school fully supports its teachers and staff in all aspects of professional development and recognises the benefits this brings to our students. Significant professional development, for all staff, has been undertaken in the last few years in the specialist areas of curriculum, communication, behaviour management and transition into the workforce.

Educational Programming

Student assessment and planning for learning
Our classes are well organised and routines orderly while effective teaching strategies make learning fun, challenging and successful. Well-targeted, meaningful, stimulating, integrated, holistic learning programmes are responsive to our students' specific and highly variable needs, and a regulated pace of learning engages students in planned, sequential learning experiences. Regular experiences outside the classroom are an integral aspect of students' literacy and communication skill development.

Throughout the school ongoing assessment practices show how well students are achieving and progressing over time while measurable goals in students' IEPs are used to identify next steps in learning with resources and assistance required to reach the desired outcomes clearly outlined.

All essential learning areas are planned for showing clear links between achievement objectives, student Iearning outcomes, individual education plans and assessment tasks.
Individual student assessment folders provide a comprehensive record of student learning and development in all curriculum and essential skill areas.

Students' portfolios show progress of learning and social development and include photographs and stories in a range of learning situations, demonstrating individual student progress and learning.

Educational Activities

Fairhaven School participates fully in education outside the classroom activities. Riding for the disabled, swimming, canoeing and cultural trust ' initiatives are fully supported along with trip planned to augment theme and topic studies.

We have subscribed to the ASDAN scheme for our older students. This is an award scheme designed to provide all secondary students with meaningful, contextual leaming. Fairhaven students will work on the ASDAN levels which best suit their needs while allowing them full access to work oppodunities available to them.

Senior students participate in community and workplace learning to develop life skills. Close links between staff and the community facilitates this invaluable student involvement in community and business projects.

Canoeing as an activity

Community Links

Parents' opinions and aspirations for their children contribute to our programme planning and learning outcomes for our students. We encourage parents, caregivers and staff to work in close partnership with us to benefit learning outcomes for each individual student understanding that open communication between home and school gives us a clear understanding of our students' pastoral care needs. We involve our community fully in our school activities.

Our motto is 'We Are Family' and we endeavour to live this motto by being a caring school fulfilling an advocacy roll for our students and their families. We vigorously maintain links with our wider school community - health, other education and community services.
